Areas of Practice:

Advice and Representation
We provide free summary advice to people who meet eligibility guidelines and whose legal problem falls within our areas of practice.
  • Employment Insurance
  • Housing
  • Immigration and Refugees
  • Income Security
    • CPP, CPP Disability, Old Age Security and Guaranteed Income Supplement
  • Social Assistance
    • Ontario Works (OW) and Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP)

We also help with applications for birth certificates, name changes, rental subsidy agreements, notarization, and declarations of income for the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP), child care and housing.

Public Legal Education
We provide legal education at conferences and to organizations on topics of interest to people living in our community. We will consider all requests for presentations. We also provide printed, plain-language materials about topics in our areas of practice.

Advocacy and Test Cases
When the law harms our client community, we will take cases to higher courts, make submissions to government bodies and lobby politicians at all levels of government on behalf of our community.

Community Development
As part of our mandate, we will help organize groups of tenants, low-wage workers, social assistance recipients or people who are homeless to assert their rights. This may involve working in concert with other progressive organizations to improve the quality of life in our community.

FAQs

  • Are the legal services free?
Yes! People who meet the income eligibility guidelines from Legal Aid Ontario can
    use our services for free.
  • Are the legal services confidential?
Yes! All information you provide is totally confidential. The only exceptions are if information shows that serious harm may occur to you or others, or if we get a request from Legal Aid Ontario for financial eligibility.
  • Is it possible you won’t take my case even if I’m eligible?
Unfortunately, the demand for our services is great. While we strive to help everyone, we may refuse a case based on our high caseload and resources, the merits of the case, or if the problem is outside of our areas of practice.
